Rocky Mountain Juniper - tidbits
The tree we use for our dowels is Rocky Mountain Juniper. Also known as Western Juniper, Rocky Mountain Red Cedar, Colorado Juniper, or Badlands Cedar. It grows almost anywhere in the western Dakota's, Wyoming, and Montana.
It can reach 13 meters in height. Some of the characteristics of the cedar are a red, brown and purple color. Hard and durable, fine grain and often knotty.

Due to the amount of resistance to moisture decay, juniper posts can still be found today in the fence lines of cattle ranches from the late 1800's.

These compounds make Cedar the perfect wood for about all outdoor uses, especially if your intent is to keep a visual harmony with the landscape. Cedar tends to stay straight and is very resistant to cracking and warpage.
