RANCH VACATIONS
Have you ever just wanted to get away from it all, get away from the city, or
just try something new? Well this is your chance to take a vacation to a real
working ranch. The Cow Creek Ranch is a Working Cattle Ranch located along
the beautiful Cheyenne River in Western South Dakota, right where the Old
Deadwood Trail crossed the river. The Ranch is mainly cattle, horses, rough river breaks and cedar
trees.
From mid May through October we take in guests wishing to ride and experience the
real life of a western ranch. We offer a relaxed atmosphere, good horses,
beautiful scenery, lots of wildlife, home cooked meals, and a comfortable bunk house
with the sounds of the river just 50 feet from your back door. Granted this is not the Hilton by
any means but we do offer a great view and lots of fun.
You
can ride one of our ranch horses to help check cattle or gather and move
cattle to new pastures or just to do some sight seeing. With 18,000 acres ranging
from 2100' at the river to 2900' at Williams Point there are plenty of things to
see. The Black Hills can even be seen off to the west from some of the high
points.
While you are here we may get the chance to have a Chuck wagon
Supper, wagon
ride and tell a few stories around the campfire.
Everyday ranch activities consist of:
Several hours of horseback riding:
checking or moving cattle,
Putting out salt & mineral
Practicing for rodeos
Haying
AIing
Working Stock Dogs
Working young horses
Building fence
Cleaning stalls and many other ranch
chores.
While you are here you are welcome to be involved in all of the ranch
activities, but do not have to be.
Or you might want to
do some of the other things that there are to do on The Cow Creek. Maybe a
little fishing, fossil hunting, rock hunting, hiking, even a several hour canoe
trip, watching the wildlife (Whitetail
and Mule Deer, Wild Turkeys, Bald & Golden Eagles, Blue Herons, Prairie
Dogs, Porcupines, and many others) or maybe go for a wagon ride in one of
the wagons used in one of the many
movies we have been involved in like
"Dances With Wolves", and "Far and Away", tour the Badlands or
Black hills or maybe just read a book and watch the river run by.
When the day
is done, it is time to rest, you can sit outside for hours in the cool summer
air, just looking at the open sky and the countless stars---- makes me happy
just thinking about it.
While you are here, there is a pretty good chance somebody will be practicing
for a rodeo or working on a young horse getting him ready for any of the timed
events in rodeo like Barrel Racing, Calf Roping, or Team Roping. In our ranch
arena.
Depending when you are here but there is a good chance there will be a rodeo
in the area, that you may want to go see.
Of course if you are looking for something smaller you can look up the lady of the ranch, there you will find milking goats, chickens, and cats.
Being on a live working ranch offers a lot to a person, if you
are looking to relax and get your thinker working again, a stay with us along
the Cheyenne River could do just that.
